J-Pop
J-pop (Japanese pop) is a broad umbrella for mainstream Japanese popular music that blends Western pop/rock, dance, and R&B with distinctly Japanese songwriting, vocal delivery, and industry practices. It is characterized by strong hooks, polished production, bright synths and guitars, frequent key changes and modulatory bridges, and chorus-first or chorus-centric structures. J-pop spans idol groups, singer-songwriters, band-oriented pop-rock, electronic dance-pop, and R&B ballads, while remaining closely tied to television, advertising, video games, and anime tie-ins (anisong).

Classic J-Rock
Classic J-Rock refers to the foundational era of Japanese rock music that crystallized from the late 1960s through the 1990s. It marries Western rock idioms—British Invasion melodicism, garage urgency, hard-rock riffing, punk’s energy, and new wave polish—with the melodic sensibilities and lyrical cadences of Japanese kayōkyoku. Hallmarks include guitar-driven arrangements (often twin-guitar leads), soaring vocal hooks, tight verse–pre-chorus–chorus songcraft, concise guitar solos, key-change climaxes, and a balance between streetwise toughness and pop accessibility. While sonically diverse—from power-pop brightness to tougher hard-rock edges—Classic J-Rock maintains an emphasis on memorable choruses and an urban-youth lyrical outlook that became the template for later Japanese rock.

Funk Rock
Funk rock is a hybrid style that fuses the syncopated grooves, percussive rhythm guitar, and deep pocket of funk with the distorted riffs, power, and song forms of rock. Typical tracks feature tight, 16th‑note rhythmic interplay between bass, drums, and rhythm guitar, while lead guitars and vocals deliver rock’s edge and attitude. The harmony often stays close to dominant 7th (Mixolydian) colors and blues vocabulary, keeping the groove front and center. The style ranges from psychedelic and P‑Funk‑inflected experiments of the late 1960s and 1970s to the punchy alternative and crossover sounds of the 1980s and 1990s, and it continues to inform dance‑oriented rock and genre‑blending bands today.

Pop Rock
Pop rock blends the hook-focused immediacy of pop with the instrumentation and drive of rock. It prioritizes catchy melodies, concise song structures, and polished production while retaining guitars, bass, and drums as core elements. Typical pop rock tracks use verse–pre-chorus–chorus forms, strong vocal harmonies, and memorable riffs. The sound ranges from jangly and bright to mildly overdriven and arena-ready, aiming for radio-friendly appeal without abandoning rock’s rhythmic punch.
