Traditional Music of Vietnam: Instrumental, Art Songs, Poetry

East Asian folk music is an umbrella term for the traditional, community-rooted musics of China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, and related cultures in the region. While the practices themselves are ancient, the category coalesced in the 1900s as folklorists, broadcasters, and state ensembles began documenting, standardizing, and reviving rural and ritual repertoires. Typical features include pentatonic-based melodies, flexible rhythm and meter, and heterophonic textures in which multiple performers ornament the same tune simultaneously. Vocal styles range from narrative epics and work songs to lyrical art-folk ballads, often delivered with regional timbres and rich ornamentation. Signature instruments include the Chinese erhu, pipa, dizi, and guzheng; the Japanese shamisen, shakuhachi, and koto; the Korean gayageum, haegeum, piri, and janggu; and Mongolian morin khuur and tovshuur, alongside various frame drums and gongs. Beyond village and ritual contexts, East Asian folk music today thrives on stage and in media, influencing popular genres and fusions that retain traditional scales, storytelling, and timbral aesthetics.

Vietnamese music is an umbrella term for the traditional, courtly, folk, and popular musics of Vietnam, spanning millennia of development and reflecting influences from neighboring East and Southeast Asia as well as later European and American styles. At its core, traditional Vietnamese music is modal, largely pentatonic, and highly vocal, with genres tied to regional dialects, poetic forms, and ceremonial contexts. Characteristic timbres come from instruments such as đàn bầu (monochord), đàn tranh (16‑string zither), đàn nguyệt (moon lute), đàn nhị (two‑string fiddle), sáo trúc (bamboo flute), and a rich array of drums and gongs. Since the early 20th century, Vietnam’s popular styles incorporated Western harmony, dance rhythms (waltz, tango), chanson aesthetics, and later rock, pop, hip hop, and EDM, resulting in distinct currents such as nhạc tiền chiến (pre‑war songs), nhạc đỏ (revolutionary music), nhạc vàng/bolero Việt Nam, and contemporary V‑Pop and Vinahouse.

Southeast Asian folk music is an umbrella for the traditional, community-rooted musics of Mainland and Island Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, and Timor. It includes work songs, dance musics, epic recitations, ritual chant, courtly entertainment, and village festivities. Across the region, common sonic traits include gong-chime and metallophone ensembles, cyclical/colotomic timekeeping, heterophonic textures (multiple voices ornamenting the same melody), and pentatonic and modal pitch systems (e.g., sléndro/pélog, Thai/Lao modal families, Vietnamese hơi). Instruments such as the kendang and rebana (drums), khlui and suling (flutes), khaen (mouth organ), various zithers (đàn tranh, kacapi), lutes (gambus, chapei), fiddles (rebab, đàn cò), and bamboo idiophones are central. The repertoire serves social and spiritual functions: animist and Buddhist rituals, Islamic festivities, harvest and rice-cycle ceremonies, courtship, historical storytelling, and communal dance. While deeply local, it has absorbed centuries of influence from Indian, Chinese, and Islamic musical cultures carried by trade, migration, and religion.

East Asian classical music refers to the interconnected courtly, ritual, and elite art-music traditions of China, Korea, Japan, and (historically) Vietnam that share a deep lineage in classical Chinese musical thought and repertory. At its core are Confucian ceremonial aesthetics, pentatonic modal systems, heterophonic ensemble textures, and codified repertoires transmitted through court institutions, temples, and literati circles. Signature sound worlds include China’s refined guqin and yayue court ensembles, Japan’s stately gagaku and Buddhist shōmyō chant, Korea’s aak (Confucian ritual), hyangak/dangak, and jeongak (court and aristocratic music), and Vietnam’s nhã nhạc (Huế court music). The result is a family of traditions marked by timbral subtlety (e.g., sho chord clusters, hichiriki reeds, silk-string zithers), flexible but ceremonially structured rhythm, and modal nuance—often conveying grandeur, contemplation, and ritual solemnity.

Vietnamese folk music encompasses the traditional singing, instrumental practices, and communal performance genres of the Kinh majority and Vietnam’s many ethnic minorities. It spans love duets, ceremonial singing, work songs, narrative ballads, trance rituals, and folk theatre. Its foundations reflect centuries of cultural exchange: a strong melodic, modal, and poetic legacy from Chinese music and theatre; and Austronesian colorings—especially in rhythm, call‑and‑response, and some instrumental/vocal idioms—transmitted through the Cham (and, more broadly, the Malay world). These layers were indigenized into distinct regional styles across the Red River Delta (North), the central coast and highlands, and the Mekong Delta (South). Representative forms include quan họ (antiphonal love duets), ca trù (ceremonial/art song with phách time‑keeper), xẩm (street busker ballads), chèo (folk opera), chầu văn/hát văn (spirit‑medium trance music), bài chòi and hò/lý (central coastal song traditions), đờn ca tài tử (southern chamber music), and many minority traditions such as Tày Then singing or Hmong khèn performance. Core instruments include đàn bầu (monochord), đàn nguyệt (moon lute), đàn tranh (zither), đàn nhị (fiddle), đàn đáy (long‑neck lute), sáo trúc (bamboo flute), and a family of frame and barrel drums.
