The Last Kingdom: Destiny Is All (Music From The TV Series And Movie)

Rune folk is a contemporary Nordic-rooted folk style that centers on runic poetry, ritual percussion, and ancient Scandinavian timbres. It blends archaic instruments (tagelharpa, bukkehorn, bone and wooden flutes, frame drums, jaw harp) with chant-like vocals and drones to evoke Iron Age and Viking-era soundscapes. The music often uses steady, trance-inducing drum patterns, call-and-response vocals, and modal melodies (Aeolian/Dorian) that sit over sustained drones. Producers favor raw, natural acoustics—wood, leather, stone—and environmental ambience to create an immersive, ceremonial atmosphere. Lyrically, performers draw from Old Norse texts, mythic themes, and reconstructed rune chants.

Viking folk is a modern folk style that seeks to evoke the sound-world, poetics, and ritual atmosphere of pre-Christian Scandinavia. Rather than being a direct reproduction of Viking Age music (which was not notated), it blends reconstructed instruments, runic and skaldic-inspired vocals, and nature-centered sound design to create an immersive, archaic aesthetic. Typical features include low, earthy frame-drum pulses; droning lyres and bowed tagelharpa; animal horns and wooden flutes; layered choral chants; and field recordings (wind, fire, water, antlers, bone). Lyrics often use Old Norse, Proto-Norse, modern Scandinavian languages, or reconstructed phonetics, with themes drawn from mythology, animism, and the cycles of nature. Production favors organic spaces, long reverbs, and ritual build-ups that move from intimate murmurs to communal, trance-like climaxes.

Faroese folk music centers on the kvæði (long narrative ballads) sung for the traditional chain dance, a communal, circular line-dance in which a lead singer (skipari) intones verses and the circle answers with a fixed refrain. Historically performed a cappella and in Faroese language, the music preserves medieval Norse balladry in strophic, modal melodies that repeat across many verses while the dance keeps time through steps rather than instruments. Over centuries, hymns (especially Kingo-style psalms) and later fiddle/accordion/guitar accompaniments entered practice, but the unaccompanied ballad-leading style remains the core of the tradition. Themes range from heroic sagas and legendary kings to local history and satirical tættir, carried by straightforward, memorable tunes designed for collective participation and endurance.
