Rune Folk
Rune folk is a contemporary Nordic-rooted folk style that centers on runic poetry, ritual percussion, and ancient Scandinavian timbres. It blends archaic instruments (tagelharpa, bukkehorn, bone and wooden flutes, frame drums, jaw harp) with chant-like vocals and drones to evoke Iron Age and Viking-era soundscapes. The music often uses steady, trance-inducing drum patterns, call-and-response vocals, and modal melodies (Aeolian/Dorian) that sit over sustained drones. Producers favor raw, natural acoustics—wood, leather, stone—and environmental ambience to create an immersive, ceremonial atmosphere. Lyrically, performers draw from Old Norse texts, mythic themes, and reconstructed rune chants.

Slavic Folk Metal
Slavic folk metal is a regional branch of folk metal that fuses heavy metal (often black- or death-leaning) with musical idioms, instruments, languages, and mytho-historical themes from Slavic cultures. Bands typically juxtapose distorted guitars and double-kick or blast‑beat drumming with traditional timbres such as gusli, balalaika, sopilka/whistle, duda (bagpipes), cimbalom, violin, accordion, and frame drums. Lyrically, the style draws on pre-Christian folklore, seasonal rites (e.g., Kupala Night), epic poetry and chronicles, heroic warfare, and animist reverence for rivers, forests, and storms. Vocals can alternate between harsh growls/screams and clean choral refrains, with frequent use of Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and other Slavic languages to preserve prosody and oral-storytelling cadence. Rhythmically, dance forms (polka, kolo/horо, kolomyika) and modal folk melodies are interwoven with metal riffing, creating music that is at once epic, earthy, and martial.

Neofolk
Neofolk is a post-industrial offshoot that blends traditional acoustic folk instrumentation with the austere atmospheres, ritual rhythms, and poetic sensibilities of the industrial and post-punk underground. It often features intimate acoustic guitars, baritone or chant-like vocals, martial or processional percussion, drones, and sparse strings or harmonium. Thematically, neofolk is preoccupied with memory, myth, and modernity—drawing on pagan or pre-Christian motifs, Romantic poetry, war-time remembrance, esoteric philosophy, and nature mysticism. The sound tends to be minimal and deliberate, favoring modal harmony and restrained dynamics that sharpen lyrical focus and mood. While sometimes called “apocalyptic folk,” the label describes the tone rather than a single ideology, as artists span a wide range of personal and political stances.
