Moorish Music From Mauritania موسقى موريش من موريتانيا

Moorish music refers to the hereditary griot tradition (iggāwen) of the Moors (Hassaniya Arabic–speaking Arab–Berber communities) of Mauritania. It is a sophisticated, courtly art that fuses Arabic poetic song with indigenous Saharan aesthetics. Its core sound centers on the tidinit (a skin-faced lute typically played by men) and the ardin (a calabash-harp traditionally played by women), supported by the t’bal frame drum and handclaps. Performances set classical Hassaniya poetry to modal melodies and cyclical rhythms, moving through established suites and emotional intensities. While deeply local, this tradition sits at the crossroads between Maghrebi/Andalusian art music and Sahel–Saharan styles. In the late 20th and 21st centuries, Moorish musicians began adapting the tidinit’s phrasing to electric guitar and modern ensembles, influencing the wider “desert blues” sound.

Griot (also called jeli/jali) is the hereditary West African tradition of poet-singers, historians, and musicians whose craft combines storytelling, praise-singing, genealogy, diplomacy, and music. It is centered in the Mande world of today’s Mali, Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea, and is best known for virtuosic performances on the kora (21‑string harp-lute), balafon (xylophone), and ngoni (lute), alongside powerful, ornamented vocals. Griot music is structured around cyclical ostinatos with improvisatory flourishes, call-and-response, and text that preserves communal memory—epics, lineages, and moral instruction—delivered in languages such as Mandinka and Bambara. While deeply traditional, the griot aesthetic has adapted to modern stages and studios, influencing global “world music,” West African pop, and blues-derived styles.

North African music is a broad cultural tapestry spanning the Maghreb and the Nile Valley, rooted in ancient Egyptian, Amazigh (Berber), Arab, and Andalusian legacies. It is characterized by modal systems related to the Arabic maqam and Maghrebi nuba traditions, intricate cyclical rhythms, and a performance aesthetic that favors heterophony, ornamentation, and call‑and‑response. Typical instruments include the oud, qanun, ney, rebab, guembri/sintir, qraqeb (karkabou), bendir, riq, and darbuka/tabla, alongside regional flutes such as the gasba. Vocal styles often feature melismatic lines and microtonal inflections, and lyrics move fluidly between Arabic dialects, Amazigh languages, and Hassaniya or Tamasheq, exploring themes of love, devotion, memory, exile, and desert life. The region’s music encompasses both classical lineages (Andalusian suites across Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia; Egyptian art song) and communal/ritual traditions (Gnawa, Sufi hadra, Tuareg desert styles), as well as modern urban forms (raï, shaabi, mahraganat) that fuse traditional rhythms with global pop, rock, and hip‑hop.
