Dessemelhantes

Nova vanguarda paulistana is a 21st‑century renewal of São Paulo’s avant‑garde song movement, reviving the independent, experimental spirit of the original Vanguarda Paulista (late 1970s–1980s) while speaking to contemporary urban Brazil. It blends MPB songwriting with angular guitars, jazz‑inflected horns, Afro‑Brazilian percussion (candomblé/ijexá toques), samba’s rhythmic vocabulary, and post‑punk/no wave edge. The results are songs that are literate and socially aware, yet physically driven by polyrhythms and timbral experimentation.

Vanguarda Paulista (Paulista avant‑garde) is a late‑1970s/early‑1980s experimental song movement from São Paulo that fused MPB songwriting with daring modernist procedures, urban satire, and DIY production. It blends samba and choro grooves with jazz harmony, art‑rock attitude, serialist/atonal writing, spoken‑sung delivery, and theatrical performance. The result is literate, rhythmically playful music that is at once tuneful and angular, witty and critical, and unmistakably paulistano in its references to the city’s everyday life.

Afoxê is an Afro‑Brazilian carnival music and performance tradition that emerged in Salvador da Bahia in the early 20th century. It is rooted in the Candomblé religion and centers on the ijexá (ijexá/ijexá) rhythm associated with the Ijexá nation of Yoruba origin. Beyond a musical style, afoxê denotes the cultural and religious blocos (processional groups) that present choreographed parades with call‑and‑response singing, ritual language, praise to orixás (deities), and an instrumentation led by atabaque drums, agogô bells, xequerê (shekere), and other hand percussion. While sacred in origin, afoxê became a visible, affirming expression of Afro‑Brazilian identity in Carnival, later informing popular Bahian music and the national soundscape.
