After the Gold Rush

Country rock is a hybrid of country music’s storytelling, twang, and acoustic textures with rock’s backbeat, amplification, and song structures. It typically features electric and acoustic guitars, pedal steel, close vocal harmonies, and a steady 4/4 groove, while lyrics focus on roads, small towns, heartbreak, and everyday American life. The sound ranges from jangly and rootsy to polished and radio-friendly, bridging bar-band energy with country elegance and shaping the template for later Americana and heartland styles.

The Laurel Canyon scene is a late‑1960s to early‑1970s Los Angeles musical movement centered around the hillside neighborhood of Laurel Canyon. Its sound blends folk’s acoustic intimacy with the rich harmonies and amplified jangle of rock, plus a mellow West Coast ease. Hallmarks include confessional, literate songwriting; stacked vocal harmonies; 12‑string electric shimmer; piano‑led balladry; light, swinging rhythms; and country‑tinged textures like pedal steel. The scene was as much a creative community as a sound—artists lived, wrote, and jammed together, cross‑pollinating ideas that shaped mainstream pop, soft rock, and singer‑songwriter music for decades. Culturally, it captured California’s post‑Beat, post‑Summer‑of‑Love sensibility: introspective yet sun‑washed, communal yet professionally polished, idealistic but tempered by adult realism.

Folk rock is a fusion genre that blends the narrative lyricism, modal melodies, and acoustic timbres of traditional folk with the backbeat, amplification, and song structures of rock. It typically pairs acoustic or traditional instruments (acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle) with a rock rhythm section (electric guitar, bass, drums), often featuring chiming 12‑string guitar textures, close vocal harmonies, and socially conscious or storytelling lyrics. The result ranges from intimate, reflective ballads with a steady backbeat to more anthemic, roots‑driven rock. Emerging in the mid‑1960s through artists such as Bob Dylan and The Byrds, folk rock became a gateway for traditional and roots materials to enter mainstream popular music, and it seeded later movements from country rock and Americana to jangle pop and modern indie folk.

Singer-songwriter is a song-focused style in which the same person writes, composes, and performs their own material, often accompanying themselves on acoustic guitar or piano. It emphasizes personal voice, lyrical intimacy, and storytelling over elaborate production. Arrangements are typically sparse, allowing the melody, words, and performance nuance to carry the song’s emotional weight. While rooted in folk and blues traditions, singer-songwriter embraces pop and rock songcraft, producing works that can range from quiet confessional ballads to subtly orchestrated, radio-ready pieces.

“Scenes & movements” is not a single musical style but a meta‑category used by historians, critics, and discographers to group releases and artists that cohere around a place, community, manifesto, press‑coined wave, or shared infrastructure (venues, labels, fanzines, studios, aesthetics). Examples include geographically rooted clusters (Merseybeat in Liverpool, CBGB punk in New York, Madchester in Manchester), ideational collectives (Rock in Opposition across the UK/Europe), press‑named waves (No Wave, C86), and label‑centric families (Elephant 6 in the U.S.). These scenes frequently develop recognizable sonic traits, visual codes, and production practices—yet what binds them first is social ecology and self‑identification rather than a strict set of musical parameters.

Roots rock is a back-to-basics strain of rock music that reconnects the electric band format with its foundational American roots in blues, country, folk, rhythm & blues, and early rock and roll. It favors sturdy songcraft, earthy timbres, and groove over studio gloss—think twangy or gritty guitars, Hammond organ or piano, a steady backbeat, and plainspoken, story-driven lyrics. The style often carries a "live-in-the-room" feel, medium tempos, and blues-based progressions, evoking bar bands, roadhouses, and rural imagery. Rather than chasing cutting-edge production or virtuosic excess, roots rock emphasizes feel, narrative, and tradition—bridging the immediacy of rock with the storytelling of folk and country and the emotional bite of the blues.

Rock is a broad family of popular music centered on amplified instruments, a strong backbeat, and song forms that foreground riffs, choruses, and anthemic hooks. Emerging from mid‑20th‑century American styles like rhythm & blues, country, and gospel-inflected rock and roll, rock quickly expanded in scope—absorbing folk, blues, and psychedelic ideas—while shaping global youth culture. Core sonic markers include electric guitar (often overdriven), electric bass, drum kit emphasizing beats 2 and 4, and emotive lead vocals. Rock songs commonly use verse–chorus structures, blues-derived harmony, and memorable melodic motifs, ranging from intimate ballads to high‑energy, stadium‑sized performances.

Regional music is an umbrella term for locally rooted musical styles that are strongly tied to a specific place, community, and cultural practice. Rather than denoting one uniform sound, it encompasses many traditions whose instrumentation, rhythms, language, and performance customs reflect the history and daily life of a region. In the recording era, labels, radio programmers, and later streaming platforms used “regional music” to group market- or scene-specific traditions (for example, Cajun in Louisiana, son in Cuba, morna in Cape Verde, or Irish traditional music). The term highlights locality, vernacular identity, and continuity with folk or indigenous practices, even when these styles modernize or cross over into pop and rock contexts.

Northern American music is an umbrella term for the diverse, syncretic musical traditions that developed across the United States and Canada. It emerged from the interaction of Indigenous musical practices, European settler and immigrant folk and sacred music, and West and Central African rhythmic and vocal traditions brought through the African diaspora. Rather than a single style, it is a landscape of practices—spirituals, work songs, fiddle tunes, shape-note hymnody, blues, jazz, country, gospel, rock and roll, R&B, and hip hop—that share core traits: narrative songwriting, emphasis on groove or backbeat, call-and-response, and a strong culture of performance and improvisation. This plural, hybrid character is the defining feature of Northern American music.
