It spans medieval carols, liturgical hymns, and oratorios through to 20th‑century Tin Pan Alley standards, crooner ballads, jazz‑swing arrangements, pop hits, gospel renditions, and contemporary acoustic or R&B interpretations. Stylistically it is diverse but often shares warm, nostalgic melodies, memorable choruses, and lyrics that reference the Nativity story, peace and goodwill, family gatherings, winter imagery, and figures like Santa Claus. Sleigh bells, choirs, strings, brass, and glockenspiel/celesta are common coloristic touches, while harmony ranges from simple I–IV–V progressions to richer jazz voicings. Its seasonal recurrence has made it a cultural tradition that reappears annually across radio, streaming, film, advertising, and public spaces.

Classical music is the notated art-music tradition of Europe and its global descendants, characterized by durable forms, carefully codified harmony and counterpoint, and a literate score-based practice. The term “classical” can refer broadly to the entire Western art-music lineage from the Medieval era to today, not just the Classical period (c. 1750s–1820s). It privileges long-form structures (such as symphonies, sonatas, concertos, masses, and operas), functional or modal harmony, thematic development, and timbral nuance across ensembles ranging from solo instruments to full orchestras and choirs. Across centuries, the style evolved from chant and modal polyphony to tonal harmony, and later to post-tonal idioms, while maintaining a shared emphasis on written notation, performance practice, and craft.

Contemporary Christian music (CCM) is a broad umbrella of popular music that expresses the Christian faith using the sound, structures, and production values of mainstream pop, rock, and singer‑songwriter styles. Emerging from the late‑1960s Jesus Movement, it pairs radio‑friendly hooks and polished arrangements with explicitly Christian lyrics—ranging from personal testimony and devotion to congregational praise. Over time, CCM has absorbed elements from soft rock, folk, country, and modern pop trends, and it now includes both artist‑driven radio pop and church‑oriented worship music.

Contemporary gospel is a modern form of gospel music that fuses the traditional message and church-rooted call-and-response of Black gospel with contemporary production and mainstream styles such as R&B, soul, pop, funk, rock, and later hip hop. It is characterized by rich vocal harmony (soloists, ensembles, and mass choirs), groove-forward rhythm sections, sophisticated keyboard-led harmony (piano, organ, Rhodes), dynamic modulations and extended vamp sections, and lyrics centered on praise, worship, testimony, and encouragement. Compared to traditional black gospel, contemporary gospel typically features sleeker studio production, radio-oriented song forms, and a broader palette of modern rhythms and textures.

Folk is a song-centered acoustic tradition rooted in community storytelling, everyday life, and social history. It emphasizes clear melodies, simple harmonies, and lyrics that foreground narrative, protest, and personal testimony. As a modern recorded genre, folk coalesced in the early-to-mid 20th century in the United States out of older ballad, work song, and rural dance traditions. It typically features acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), strophic song forms, and participatory singing (choruses, call-and-response).

Chamber music is a tradition of composed music for small ensembles—typically one player per part—intended for intimate spaces such as courts, salons, and private rooms rather than large public halls. Its aesthetic emphasizes clarity of texture, conversational interplay among parts, and balance without a conductor. Hallmark formations include the string quartet, piano trio, wind quintet, string quintet, and various mixed ensembles. Multi‑movement cycles (often in sonata form) and finely wrought counterpoint are common, ranging from Baroque trio sonatas to Classical string quartets and modern works with expanded timbres and techniques. Because of its scale and transparency, chamber music has long been a proving ground for compositional craft and ensemble musicianship, shaping the core of Western art music from the Baroque through the present.

LDS is sacred and devotional music associated with members and institutions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It spans traditional hymnody, large-scale choir-and-orchestra works, and contemporary pop/folk worship songs that emphasize faith in Jesus Christ, family, missionary service, and personal devotion. Stylistically, it blends 19th‑century Anglo-American hymn traditions and Western classical choral writing with modern adult-contemporary and singer‑songwriter sensibilities. Production ranges from reverent, text‑forward piano/strings ballads to expansive, cinematic choral/orchestral recordings, often created for meetings, broadcasts, and cultural events.
