Reggae
Reggae is a popular music genre from Jamaica characterized by a laid-back, syncopated groove, prominent bass lines, and steady offbeat “skank” guitar or keyboard chords. The rhythmic core often emphasizes the third beat in a bar (the “one drop”), creating a spacious, rolling feel that foregrounds bass and drums. Typical instrumentation includes drum kit, electric bass, rhythm and lead guitars, keyboards/organ (notably the Hammond and the percussive "bubble"), and often horn sections. Tempos generally sit around 70–80 BPM (or 140–160 BPM felt in half-time), allowing vocals to breathe and messages to be clearly delivered. Lyrically, reggae ranges from love songs and everyday storytelling to incisive social commentary, resistance, and spirituality, with Rastafarian culture and language (e.g., “I and I”) playing a central role in many classic recordings. Studio production techniques—spring reverbs, tape delays, and creative mixing—became signature elements, especially through dub versions that strip down and reimagine tracks.

Seggae
Seggae is a Mauritian fusion genre that blends the loping pulse and skanking guitar of reggae with the hand‑drummed grooves and call‑and‑response vocals of sega, the island’s traditional dance music. It typically features Creole (Kreol Morisien) lyrics that address everyday life, social justice, spirituality, and national identity, delivering protest themes in an uplifting, highly danceable format. Created in the mid‑1980s and popularized by the singer‑guitarist Kaya and his band Racinetatane, seggae became a cultural voice for Mauritius and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Séga
Séga is a Creole dance‑music tradition from the southwest Indian Ocean, most closely associated with Mauritius (and also present in Réunion and Rodrigues). It is built on hand percussion, call‑and‑response singing, and a lilting, swaying groove that invites circular hip movements. Traditional ensembles center on the ravanne (a large frame drum), the maravanne/kayamb (a shaker made from dried sugarcane flower seed pods), and a metal triangle. Modern bands often add guitar, bass, keyboards, and drum kit while preserving the characteristic beat. Lyrics are typically in Mauritian Creole and speak with wit and warmth about everyday life, love, celebration, and social observation. Rhythmically, séga usually leans on a gently swung, buoyant pulse (often felt in 6/8 or a swaying 4 subdivided in three) with interlocking percussive patterns. Harmonies are simple and major‑key leaning, supporting singable melodies and refrains.
