Description

Keller synth (literally “cellar synth” in German) is a raw, lo‑fi branch of dungeon synth characterized by dim, basement‑recorded atmospheres, DIY cassette aesthetics, and occult or medievalist imagery.

It emphasizes minimal, repetitive motifs, organ and pad timbres, and heavy reverb, often embracing tape hiss, room noise, and deliberate imperfection as part of the music’s mood. Compared with more cinematic dungeon synth, keller synth tends to be grittier and more subterranean in feel—closer to an intimate ritual than a widescreen fantasy score.

History

Origins (1990s roots)

Dungeon synth emerged in the early–mid 1990s from the black metal underground as keyboard‑based, medievalist interludes and standalone projects. Pioneers established the template of minor‑key ostinatos, rudimentary drum programming (if any), and a penchant for mythic or chthonic themes.

DIY basements and cassette culture

Even in its first wave, much of this music was recorded at home on budget gear, circulating via tapes and small labels. The “cellar” or “keller” connotation—music crafted in basements and rehearsal rooms—was already part of the broader underground ethos.

2010s revival

A large Bandcamp‑centered revival in the 2010s broadened dungeon synth’s audience and aesthetics. Artists experimented with warmer “comfy” palettes and, conversely, with darker, rougher textures inspired by early tape releases and black ambient.

The 2020s: naming the sound “keller synth”

In the 2020s, the term keller synth gained currency on DIY circles and labels to denote the most raw, dust‑covered end of dungeon synth—music that actively foregrounds cassette saturation, room resonance, and a claustrophobic, torch‑lit mood. While international in practice, the German moniker reflects the strong central‑European presence of projects and micro‑labels cultivating this aesthetic.

Aesthetics today

Keller synth remains intentionally small‑scale: short runs on tape, xeroxed artwork, medieval woodcut or occult visuals, and track titles referencing folklore, ruins, witchcraft, and nocturnal rites. It thrives precisely by keeping the recording process as tangible—and imperfect—as possible.

How to make a track in this genre

Sound palette
•   Prioritize low‑cost or vintage keyboards, freeware VSTs, or small analog modules. Organs, strings, choirs, and simple saw/square pads are staples. •   Embrace the room: record in untreated spaces; keep subtle creaks, hum, and mic hiss. Print to cassette or add tape emulation/wow‑and‑flutter.
Harmony & melody
•   Work in natural minor, harmonic minor, Phrygian, or Dorian for archaic color. •   Build pieces from 2–4 bar ostinatos; add slow, chant‑like melodies an octave above. •   Use perfect fifths, open octaves, and pedal drones to suggest medieval modality.
Rhythm & form
•   Often beatless or with very sparse, tom‑like pulses. If using percussion, keep it distant and irregular, like ritual drums. •   Moderate–slow tempi (40–90 BPM). Favor simple A–B forms or gradual layer accretion over complex structures.
Texture & production
•   Heavy plate/hall reverb; long tails that smear transients into a cavernous space. •   Subtle detuning, chorus, or vibrato to evoke unstable candle‑lit ambience. •   Intentionally conservative EQ; avoid bright top‑end. Let tape hiss sit as part of the air.
Thematic framing
•   Titles, artwork, and liner notes reference cellars, ruins, folklore, witchcraft, nocturnal landscapes. •   Keep arrangements intimate and concise to maintain the “hidden‑in‑the‑basement” mystique.
