Muzika Mizrahit
Muzika mizrahit (Israeli Mizrahi or Oriental music) is a modern Israeli popular genre rooted in the musical traditions of Jewish communities from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. It blends Arabic, Turkish, Greek (laïko/rebetiko), and Andalusian influences with Hebrew lyrics and contemporary pop production. Musically it favors modal melodies drawn from Middle Eastern maqam systems (e.g., Hijaz, Bayat, Kurd) and characteristic vocal ornamentation (melisma, microtonal inflections). Typical instruments include oud, bouzouki, qanun, violin, darbuka/tabla, riq, and handclaps, increasingly complemented by synthesizers, drum machines, and pop/EDM-style arrangements. Lyrically, songs often revolve around love, longing, family, faith, and place, moving between dance-forward party anthems and deeply emotive ballads. Since the 1990s, the style has moved from a marginalized “cassette culture” to the mainstream of Israeli pop.

Moroccan Chaabi
Moroccan chaabi is Morocco’s modern popular music, a lively, community-centered style that blends Andalusi melodic heritage, sung poetry (malhun), rural aita vocal traditions, Amazigh rhythmic sensibilities, and Gnawa grooves. It is the soundtrack of weddings and street celebrations, prized for its danceable pulse, catchy refrains, and call-and-response singing. Typically led by violin (kamanja) and oud with a strong hand-percussion core (bendir, taarija, darbuka), chaabi arrangements ride buoyant 6/8 and 2/4 feels. Lyrics move between romance, satire, and social commentary, delivered with ornamented vocals and spontaneous audience interaction.

Malhun
Malhun (also spelled Melhoun) is a tradition of sung vernacular poetry from Morocco, performed in Moroccan Arabic (Darija) to refined, Andalusi-influenced melodic modes and measured rhythmic cycles. It takes the form of lengthy qasidas (odes) built on monorhyme and strophic design, typically featuring a recurring refrain (harba) answered by a responsive chorus. A small orchestra—centered on oud, kamanja (violin), and frame/goblet drums—supports a lead vocalist whose ornate, melismatic delivery and narrative diction bring the text’s imagery, satire, devotion, or romance to life. Rooted in urban craft guilds and Sufi circles of cities like Meknes, Fez, Marrakesh, and Tafilalt/Sijilmassa, malhun bridges classical Arab poetics with local musical aesthetics. Its performance style balances literary sophistication with popular accessibility, making it both a repository of Moroccan cultural memory and a living stage art.
