Hollands
Hollands (often called Hollandse muziek) is a Dutch-language popular style rooted in the levenslied tradition and Central European schlager, blending sentimental storytelling with catchy, easy-to-sing choruses. Typical arrangements feature accordion or keyboards, light rhythm sections, and bright melodic hooks. The songs oscillate between festive, sing-along party anthems and tender, nostalgic ballads about everyday life, love, heartbreak, and working-class pride. Clear diction, emotive delivery, and straightforward verse–chorus forms make the style broadly accessible across generations in the Netherlands.

Traditional Music
Traditional music is an umbrella term used in the mid–20th century by folklorists and ethnomusicologists to denote community-rooted, orally transmitted repertoires tied to social ritual, work, celebration, and storytelling. Unlike commercial pop or art-music traditions, traditional music is typically learned by ear, varies regionally, and evolves slowly through communal participation. It often features modal melodies, cyclic rhythms, heterophony or unison singing, and indigenous instruments whose timbres are integral to local identity. Lyrics tend to preserve language, history, and collective memory. While the musical practices themselves can be ancient, the phrase “traditional music” emerged to replace earlier, narrower or colonial framings like “folk” or “ethnic” music, foregrounding continuity, locality, and living practice rather than exoticism.

Doina
Doina is a free-rhythm, highly ornamented, improvisatory song form from Romania (also found in Moldova and neighboring regions). Traditionally performed as an unmetered vocal lament or a rhapsodic instrumental solo, it foregrounds expressive rubato, melismas, and microtimbral nuance. Its melodies draw on modal pitch collections—often Dorian, Aeolian (natural minor), and, in many klezmer-influenced settings, the Ahava Rabbah/Hijaz (Phrygian dominant) mode with characteristic augmented seconds. Phrases expand and contract with breath and emotion rather than a fixed pulse, typically ending with a sighing descent to the tonic. Common timbres include solo voice, nai (pan flute), fluier (shepherd’s flute), violin, and, in lăutar ensembles, cobza and cimbalom; in klezmer contexts, clarinet or violin carries the doina. The piece can stand alone as an introspective lament or serve as a prelude to a lively dance tune (e.g., hora, sârba, or freylekhs).
