Onda Nueva
Onda nueva is a Venezuelan fusion style created and championed by composer, arranger, and bandleader Aldemaro Romero. It modernizes the country’s traditional joropo by filtering its characteristic cross‑rhythms and melodies through the harmonic language and textures of jazz and bossa nova. Typically arranged for piano‑led small ensembles or studio orchestras, onda nueva pairs sophisticated, extended jazz harmonies with the propulsive, dancing feel of llanero rhythms. The result is a sleek, urbane sound—at once rooted in Venezuelan folklore and polished for cosmopolitan listening—that flourished on radio, records, and stage festivals in the early 1970s.

Música Llanera
Música llanera is the folkloric music of the Orinoco plains (Llanos) of Venezuela and eastern Colombia. It is built around the distinctive joropo llanero dance-song tradition, featuring rapid, interlocking rhythms in a characteristic 3/4–6/8 sesquiáltera feel. Typical ensembles include arpa llanera (plains harp), cuatro (a small four‑string guitar), maracas, bandola llanera, and voice. The music ranges from high-energy, virtuosic "golpes" and the iconic pieces pajarillo, quirpa, and zumba que zumba, to the slower, lyrical "pasaje" numbers. Singing often uses improvised coplas and contrapunteo (sung duels), with lyrics celebrating cattle-driving life, rivers, horses, love, and the vast prairie landscape. Its timbre is defined by the bright, percussive arpa llanera arpeggios, the crisp, syncopated cuatro strumming (golpe llanero), and the maracas’ complex polyrhythms that glue the ensemble together while propelling dancers’ zapateo footwork.

Villancico
Villancico is an Iberian song form that emerged in late medieval Spain and flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Originally a secular, vernacular song associated with rural or popular themes, it evolved into a predominantly sacred genre performed in churches and cathedrals—especially around Christmas. Structurally, a villancico typically alternates a recurring refrain (estribillo) with one or more stanzas (coplas), often in lively, dance-like meters. Texts may be in Spanish or Portuguese and sometimes incorporate dialects and topical characters (for example, negrillos, pastorcillos), while the music ranges from simple strophic tunes to richly scored polychoral works with instrumental accompaniment.
