Deep smooth R&B is a mellow, slow-burning branch of contemporary R&B that foregrounds velvety vocals, subdued grooves, and luxurious, jazz-tinged harmony. It favors space over spectacle: understated drum programming, warm Rhodes or synth pads, softly plucked neo‑soul guitar, and round 808 subs create a candle‑lit, late‑night atmosphere. Stylistically it sits at the intersection of quiet storm balladry, 1990s/2000s contemporary R&B, and neo‑soul, filtered through modern minimalist production aesthetics. Lyrics often center on intimacy, vulnerability, and reflective romance, delivered with breathy, close‑mic nuance and layered harmonies. Typical tempos live in a relaxed 60–85 BPM range, frequently in half‑time, with extended chords (maj7, min9, add9, 11ths/13ths) and gentle modal colorings.

Deep R&B is a streaming‑era microgenre of contemporary R&B characterized by intimate, atmospheric production, slow to mid‑tempo grooves, and emotionally candid vocals. Producers favor spacious mixes with warm low‑end (808s or sub‑bass), hushed drum programming, and reverb‑washed pads or guitar, creating a late‑night, immersive feel. Aesthetically it sits at the intersection of alternative R&B and the moody, minimalist “Toronto sound” that rose in the early 2010s, blending R&B songwriting with hip‑hop, ambient and electronic textures, and occasional trap soul cadences. Lyrically it leans toward introspection, romance, and vulnerability, often delivered in close‑miked, breathy tones or falsetto.

New Jack Smooth is a sub-genre of R&B that serves as a bridge between the rhythmic intensity of New Jack Swing and the sensual, melodic atmosphere of Quiet Storm. It retains the characteristic 'swing' drum patterns, heavy gated snares, and hip-hop influenced production of New Jack Swing but applies them to mid-tempo grooves and ballads rather than high-energy dance tracks. The sound is defined by its polished production, lush synthesizer layers, and a focus on romantic, soulful vocal performances, creating a vibe that is both danceable and suitable for late-night listening.
