Rasin
Rasin (mizik rasin in Haitian Creole), often called Haitian roots music, fuses traditional Vodou ceremonial and folkloric rhythms with modern popular styles. It places hand drums, vaksin bamboo/metal trumpets, ogan bells, and call‑and‑response Kreyòl vocals at the center, while electric bass, rock guitars, keyboards, and drum set reinforce the groove. Musically, rasin draws on sacred rhythms (Rada, Petwo, Nago, Kongo, Yanvalou), rara street-procession patterns, and the danceable lilt of compas, then filters them through reggae backbeats, funk syncopation, and rock energy. Lyrically it is grounded in Haitian spirituality, history, and social critique—songs may invoke lwa (spirits) such as Ogou or Ezili, celebrate lakou (community), and address contemporary politics and identity. The result is a vibrant, percussive, and communal sound that works both as ritual-rooted music and as amplified stage music for carnivals, concerts, and international festivals.

Dance
Dance (as a broad, mainstream club- and radio-oriented style) is pop-leaning music designed primarily for dancing, characterized by steady, driving beats, catchy hooks, and production that translates well to nightclubs and large sound systems. It emerged after disco, blending four-on-the-floor rhythms with electronic instrumentation and pop songwriting, and it continually absorbs elements from house, techno, Hi-NRG, synth-pop, and later EDM. Tempos commonly fall between 110–130 BPM, vocals often emphasize memorable choruses, and arrangements are structured for both club mixing and mass appeal.

Rara
Rara is a Haitian processional street music performed mainly during Lent and around Easter, combining Afro-Haitian ritual rhythms, call-and-response singing, and piercing bamboo or metal trumpets called vaksen. Ensembles parade through neighborhoods, creating interlocking rhythmic patterns while dancers and singers respond to the lead calls. The music is rooted in Vodou ceremonial drumming and West African rhythmic lineages, but it also reflects the island’s colonial history through its parading format and use of portable, high-volume instruments. Lyrics in Haitian Kreyòl range from celebratory to satirical and political, and the sound is defined by cyclical grooves, hocketing horn lines, and a mobile, outdoor performance energy.
