Try Not to Destroy Everything you Love

Emotional black metal is a modern strain of black metal that foregrounds catharsis, melody, and atmosphere while retaining the genre’s intense vocal timbre and dynamic extremity. It blends tremolo‑picked guitars and blast beats with shoegaze/post‑rock textures, luminous chord voicings, and sweeping crescendos. The result is music that feels both searing and tender—balancing shrieked, aching vocals against shimmering guitar layers, reverb‑soaked ambience, and harmonic progressions that move between minor melancholy and bittersweet, uplifting turns. Lyrically, it leans into introspection: themes of grief, longing, memory, nature, and existential reflection are common. Compared to traditional second‑wave black metal, it is more emotive, more dynamically varied, and often more accessible without relinquishing visceral power.

Blackgaze is a fusion of black metal’s intensity (tremolo‑picked guitars, blast beats, harsh shrieks) with shoegaze’s lush, immersive textures and dreamy melodicism. It typically layers high‑gain, reverb‑drenched guitars into a luminous wall of sound, favoring suspended or added‑tone chords that blur tonality and create a sense of vastness. Songs often unfold in long arcs with dramatic dynamic shifts—from pummeling crescendos to breathy, ambient passages—and may juxtapose screamed vocals with soft, clean singing. While the mood can be bleak or melancholic, many blackgaze works balance darkness with radiant, almost euphoric uplift, aided by expansive production and post‑rock pacing.

Avant-garde black metal is a boundary‑pushing strain of black metal that embraces experimental composition, unorthodox timbres, and genre hybridity. It retains core black‑metal signifiers—tremolo‑picked guitars, blast beats, and harsh vocals—while folding in dissonant harmonies, unusual time signatures, electronics, chamber instrumentation, and studio-as-instrument production. The result ranges from claustrophobic, abstract sound‑design to cinematic, spectral atmospheres, often prioritizing concept, mood, and texture over conventional riff‑verse‑chorus writing. Lyrically and thematically, it favors philosophical, surreal, or esoteric subjects, expanding beyond genre tropes into modernist poetry, absurdism, and metaphysical inquiry.

Shoegaze is a subgenre of alternative rock characterized by dense, immersive walls of guitar sound, heavily layered effects, and vocals that blend into the mix as another texture rather than a focal point. Typically mid-tempo and enveloping, it emphasizes timbre, atmosphere, and harmonic color over riff-driven hooks. Reverb, delay, chorus, tremolo, fuzz, and pitch-bending create a blurred, dreamlike quality—often described as a "wash"—while bass and drums provide a steady, understated foundation. The style emerged in the United Kingdom in the late 1980s; the term "shoegaze" was coined by the British press, referencing performers’ tendency to look down at their pedalboards during live shows.

Metal (often used to mean heavy metal in its broad, umbrella sense) is a loud, guitar-driven style of rock defined by high-gain distortion, emphatic and often martial rhythms, and a dense, powerful low end. It foregrounds riff-based songwriting, dramatic dynamics, virtuosic guitar solos, and commanding vocals that range from melodic wails to aggressive snarls and growls. Harmonically, metal favors minor modes, modal color (Aeolian, Phrygian), chromaticism, and tritone-inflected tension, while thematically it explores power, mythology, the occult, social critique, fantasy, and existential subjects. While adjacent to hard rock, metal typically pushes amplification, distortion, precision, and thematic intensity further, forming a foundation for many specialized subgenres.
