Tristeza on Guitar

Samba‑jazz is a Brazilian small‑combo style that fuses the propulsive, syncopated rhythms of samba with the harmony, form, and improvisational language of modern jazz (especially hard bop and cool jazz). It is typically more energetic and instrumental than bossa nova, emphasizing virtuosic interaction in piano‑trio and quartet/quintet settings. The drumming concept—pioneered by Edison Machado and others—moves the samba pulse to the ride cymbal and hi‑hat ("samba no prato"), while the bass suggests surdo patterns and the piano/guitar supplies rich jazz voicings. Heads are often concise, followed by swinging, straight‑eighth samba grooves under extended improvisations, and a tight return to the theme.

MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) is a broad Brazilian popular music movement that crystallized in the mid-1960s after bossa nova. It blends samba and other regional rhythms with jazz harmony, singer‑songwriter craft, and elements of contemporary pop and rock. The style is marked by sophisticated melodies, extended harmonies, inventive arrangements, and lyrically rich songs that often use poetry and metaphor. Many classic MPB works balance intimacy (voice and violão/nylon‑string guitar) with lush studio orchestration, drawing from samba‑canção, choro, baião, and frevo while engaging modern influences. Historically, MPB provided a platform for social commentary during Brazil’s military dictatorship, with artists employing allegory to navigate censorship. It remains a living tradition that continually renews itself through new generations (“nova MPB”).

Bossa nova is a Brazilian popular music style that emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s, blending samba’s syncopated pulse with the harmonic sophistication and understated cool of jazz. It is characterized by intimate, almost whispered vocals; a nylon‑string guitar playing the distinctive batida (a gently syncopated, two-beat accompaniment); subtle, brushed percussion; and lush, extended jazz harmonies. The mood is relaxed, refined, and full of saudade—a bittersweet sense of longing—often evoking images of Rio’s beaches, nightclubs, and urban modernity.

Samba-choro is a subgenre of samba that crystallized in early-1930s Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It fuses the rhythmic pulse and vocal songcraft of samba with the contrapuntal melodies, virtuosic lines, and harmonic movement of choro. Typically at a medium tempo, samba-choro keeps the syncopated 2/4 swing of samba while adopting choro’s instrumental color—cavaquinho, seven‑string guitar, flute or clarinet—and adds lyrics, turning the choro idiom into elegant, witty popular song. The result is a sophisticated, urban style associated with the radio era, café society, and the rise of Brazilian popular music on 78‑rpm records.

Southeastern Brazilian music refers to the rich web of popular and traditional styles that crystallized in the urban centers of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Espírito Santo. It encompasses historic genres such as choro and samba, mid‑century developments like bossa nova and MPB, and late‑20th‑century urban forms including funk carioca and hip hop. Rhythmically, it fuses African‑diasporic percussion with European song forms and harmony. Instrumentation ranges from cavaquinho, pandeiro, surdo, cuíca, tamborim, bandolim, and flute in choro/samba ensembles to nylon‑string guitar, jazz‑leaning piano/bass/drums in bossa nova and MPB, and 808‑driven beats and sampling in funk carioca and São Paulo rap. Harmonically, the region is noted for both the contrapuntal elegance of choro and the sophisticated extended‑chord vocabulary of bossa nova and MPB. Culturally, carnival, samba schools, radio, and the recording industry helped project these sounds nationwide and globally.

Samba is an Afro‑Brazilian musical and dance tradition that crystallized in Rio de Janeiro in the early 20th century, rooted in the rhythms, rituals, and communal celebrations of the Afro‑diasporic population. It is typically in 2/4 meter with characteristic syncopations, off‑beat accents, and call‑and‑response refrains. The groove is carried by a bateria (percussion ensemble) featuring surdo, pandeiro, tamborim, cuíca, agogô, reco‑reco, and repinique, while chordal instruments such as violão (6‑ and 7‑string guitars) and cavaquinho provide rich, swinging harmonies. Melodies often draw on Portuguese lyric traditions, African rhythmic phrasing, and the expressive poetics of everyday urban life—love, neighborhood pride, carnival, devotion, and saudade. Across the 20th century, samba diversified into many substyles (samba‑canção, samba‑enredo, partido‑alto, samba de roda, samba de gafieira), and later catalyzed entire currents like bossa nova, MPB, and samba‑rock, remaining Brazil’s most globally recognizable sound.

Jazz is an improvisation-centered music tradition that emerged from African American communities in the early 20th century. It blends blues feeling, ragtime syncopation, European harmonic practice, and brass band instrumentation into a flexible, conversational art. Defining features include swing rhythm (a triplet-based pulse), call-and-response phrasing, blue notes, and extended harmonies built on 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths. Jazz is as much a way of making music—spontaneous interaction, variation, and personal sound—as it is a set of forms and tunes. Across its history, jazz has continually hybridized, from New Orleans ensembles and big-band swing to bebop, cool and hard bop, modal and free jazz, fusion, and contemporary cross-genre experiments. Its influence permeates global popular and art music.

Choro is an urban Brazilian instrumental genre that arose in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century. It blends European dance forms (polka, schottische, waltz, mazurka) with Afro-Brazilian rhythmic sensibilities from styles like lundu and early maxixe, producing a supple, highly syncopated groove. Typical choro ensembles (regionais) feature a lead melodic instrument—often flute, clarinet, or bandolim (mandolin)—supported by cavaquinho and 6-string guitar for harmony, a 7‑string guitar providing counter-melodic bass lines (baixarias), and pandeiro for light percussion. Pieces commonly use multi-strain forms (e.g., AABBACCA), incorporate modulations, and encourage melodic variations and counterpoint rather than long harmonic solos. The result is music that is both virtuosic and lyrical, at once salon-refined and street-savvy.
