Celtic metal is a fusion of heavy metal with the traditional music of the Celtic nations, especially Ireland and Scotland. It blends distorted guitars, bass, and drums with folk instruments such as uilleann pipes, tin whistle, fiddle, bouzouki, harp, and bodhrán. Stylistically, it often borrows rhythmic cells from jigs and reels (in 6/8 or 12/8), employs modal harmony (Dorian and Mixolydian are common), and incorporates pentatonic and drone-based melodies. The lyrical focus typically explores mythology, folklore, history, and landscapes of the Celtic world, delivered through a mix of harsh and clean vocals, sometimes in Gaelic or other Celtic languages. The result ranges from epic, melodic arrangements to blackened, atmospheric soundscapes, maintaining a strong sense of place and tradition within a metal framework.

Medieval rock is a fusion of contemporary rock with melodies, modes, instruments, and themes drawn from European medieval and early Renaissance music. It typically combines a rock rhythm section (drums, electric bass, guitars) with historical instruments such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawms, citterns, recorders, harp, and lute. Musical materials often use modal scales (especially Dorian, Aeolian, and Mixolydian), drones, bordun-style accompaniments, and dance rhythms reminiscent of estampies, saltarellos, and bourrées. The lyrics and imagery frequently reference chivalric tales, minstrelsy, courtly love, folklore, and Middle High German or other archaic languages. In performance, many bands adopt a festive, theatrical medieval pageant aesthetic while delivering high-energy rock arrangements.

Folk metal blends the power and riff-driven intensity of heavy metal with melodies, instruments, scales, and storytelling traditions from regional folk music. Typical arrangements combine distorted guitars, bass, and drums with fiddles, flutes, whistles, bagpipes, accordions, hurdy-gurdies, bouzoukis, and other traditional instruments. Bands often draw on myth, history, and local folklore for lyrical themes, ranging from epic sagas and battle hymns to drinking songs and pastoral ballads. The style spans a spectrum from aggressive and blackened approaches to upbeat, danceable, and festive moods, making it one of metal’s most diverse and regionally distinctive subgenres.

Rock urbano is a Spanish working‑class strain of rock that blends hard rock riffs, bluesy guitar language, and a gritty, street‑level lyrical sensibility. It favors straightforward song forms, punchy rhythms, and raspy, lived‑in vocals over flash or studio gloss. The genre emerged as an earthy counterpoint to trendier new wave and pop scenes, centering on everyday struggle, friendship, nightlife, and social critique. Its sound is guitar‑driven, anthem‑minded, and designed for bars, clubs, and festivals, with chantable choruses and emotive solos.

Celtic rock blends the energy and instrumentation of rock with the melodic modes, dance rhythms, and timbres of Celtic traditions from Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. Electric guitars, bass, and drum kit sit alongside fiddles, tin whistles, uilleann pipes, bouzouki, and bagpipes, creating anthemic songs and tune sets that feel both ancient and modern. Emerging in the early 1970s, the style offered a contemporary vehicle for Celtic languages and storytelling, while keeping jigs, reels, and airs alive on amplified stages. Over time it grew into a festival-ready sound that influenced punk, metal, and various pop crossovers, and became a musical emblem of Celtic identity at home and in the diaspora.
