Kids On Holiday (Live)

Freak folk is a 2000s revival and mutation of psychedelic and traditional folk that embraces eccentric vocals, surreal lyrics, and homespun, experimental arrangements. It blends fingerpicked acoustics and hand percussion with harps, harmoniums, toy instruments, and found sounds, often recorded in lo‑fi, intimate settings. Aesthetically, it is earthy yet otherworldly: pastoral melodies, drones, and modal harmonies coexist with whimsical, childlike timbres and mystical imagery. The scene is closely associated with the New Weird America movement, valuing communal creativity, DIY production, and a porous boundary between folk tradition and avant‑garde exploration.

Noise pop blends the tunefulness and hook-centric structures of pop with abrasive textures such as feedback, distortion, and tape hiss. It typically features bright, simple melodies buried beneath a dense, overdriven "wall of sound," with vocals often mixed low or coated in reverb. The aesthetic draws on 1960s girl-group and power-pop songwriting but delivers it through punk-informed energy and noise-rock sonics, creating music that is simultaneously sweet and scuffed.

Dance-punk is a fusion of punk’s abrasive energy and attitude with the groove-forward rhythms of funk and disco. It favors tight, four-on-the-floor drum patterns, rubbery and syncopated bass lines, choppy, scratchy rhythm guitars, and percussion accents like cowbell and handclaps. Vocals are often shouted, talk-sung, or delivered with sardonic cool, and lyrics tend to be ironic, urban, and socially observant. A first wave emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s alongside post-punk and no wave scenes (especially in New York and the UK), while a high-profile revival in the early 2000s (centered around DFA Records) brought analog synths, minimalist production, and indie-club sensibilities back to the fore.
