World
World music is a broad, industry-coined umbrella for traditional, folk, and contemporary popular styles from around the globe that fall outside the Anglo-American pop mainstream. The label emerged in the 1980s as a retail and marketing category to group diverse regional musics for international distribution. Musically, it spans acoustic and electric instrumentation; modal, pentatonic, and microtonal pitch systems; and rhythms ranging from cyclical grooves and polyrhythms to asymmetrical meters. While the term can obscure local specificity, it also facilitated cross-cultural collaboration, festivals, and recordings that brought regional genres to wider audiences.

Mbaqanga
Mbaqanga is a South African township dance music that crystallized in the early 1960s, blending marabi piano-jazz harmonies, kwela’s lilting rhythms, and traditional Zulu/Sotho vocal styles with electric guitars, bass, saxophones, and drum kit. Characterized by a driving 4/4 shuffle, cyclical bass ostinati, choppy off‑beat rhythm guitar, tight horn riffs, and vibrant call-and-response vocals, it is both earthy and urbane—music made for public dances, shebeens, and radio alike. The term “mbaqanga” (a Zulu word for a steamed maize bread) came to signify a homegrown, filling, and proudly local sound that nonetheless drew on global jazz and R&B currents. A signature substyle, mgqashiyo, features a gravel-voiced male lead (“the groaner”) backed by a bright female chorus and a virtuoso electric band, epitomizing the music’s propulsive, joyful energy.

Maskanda
Maskanda (also spelled Maskandi) is a Zulu guitar-driven folk style from South Africa that blends rural traditions with urban migration-era storytelling. It is characterized by rapid, percussive fingerpicking on acoustic or electric guitar, a free-tempo introductory flourish (often called an izihlabo), and narrative vocals that frequently incorporate Zulu praise poetry (izibongo), call-and-response refrains, and social commentary. Typical ensembles add bass, drums, concertina and/or violin, producing a bright, rhythmic groove that supports the troubadour-like lead singer. The music is both danceable and reflective, carrying the feel of the countryside into the city while addressing the lived realities of working-class Zulu communities.

Rock
Rock is a broad family of popular music centered on amplified instruments, a strong backbeat, and song forms that foreground riffs, choruses, and anthemic hooks. Emerging from mid‑20th‑century American styles like rhythm & blues, country, and gospel-inflected rock and roll, rock quickly expanded in scope—absorbing folk, blues, and psychedelic ideas—while shaping global youth culture. Core sonic markers include electric guitar (often overdriven), electric bass, drum kit emphasizing beats 2 and 4, and emotive lead vocals. Rock songs commonly use verse–chorus structures, blues-derived harmony, and memorable melodic motifs, ranging from intimate ballads to high‑energy, stadium‑sized performances.

Marabi
Marabi is a South African urban dance music that emerged in the townships around Johannesburg during the 1920s. It is built on hypnotic, cyclical chord vamps—often a simple I–IV–I–V loop—played on cheap pedal organs or upright pianos in informal drinking houses known as shebeens. Blending African melodic phrasing and call-and-response with the syncopation and harmonic language of American ragtime, stride, and early jazz/swing, marabi created an irresistibly danceable groove. As the style moved from small shebeen settings to larger ensembles, saxophones, trumpets, guitar/banjo, bass, and drums amplified its energy and helped define what became known as “township jazz.” Marabi’s infectious vamps and social vitality laid the groundwork for later South African genres such as kwela and mbaqanga.
