Celtic folk music is the modern umbrella for living folk traditions that grew from the Celtic-speaking regions of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, Brittany (France), and the northwestern Iberian areas of Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria, as well as Trás-os-Montes in Portugal. It centers on modal melodies (often Dorian and Mixolydian), strong dance rhythms (reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, strathspeys), and richly ornamented tune-playing on fiddle, flutes and whistles, bagpipes (Uilleann and Highland), harp, accordion/concertina, and increasingly the Irish bouzouki and guitar. Vocal styles range from unaccompanied sean-nós and Gaelic ballads to chorus-led pub songs, with themes of landscape, seafaring, migration, love, labor, resistance, and communal memory. Arrangements frequently present sets of tunes—several related dance airs played back-to-back at rising intensity—supported by drone textures, syncopated bodhrán patterns, and modal pedal points, creating a propulsive, earthy, and often celebratory sound.

Celtic is a broad, pan-regional umbrella for the traditional and tradition-inspired music of the Celtic nations—primarily Ireland and Scotland, but also Brittany (France), Wales, Galicia (Spain), the Isle of Man, and Cornwall. It is characterized by modal melodies (often Dorian and Mixolydian), lilting dance rhythms (reels in 4/4, jigs in 6/8, slip jigs in 9/8, hornpipes with dotted swing), and extensive ornamentation (cuts, rolls, crans, grace notes). Typical instruments include fiddle, wooden flute, tin whistle, uilleann pipes or Great Highland bagpipes, button accordion/concertina, bodhrán, Celtic harp, bouzouki (adopted into Irish music), guitar, and occasionally piano. Vocal traditions range from unaccompanied sean-nós singing to narrative ballads in English, Irish (Gaeilge), and Scottish Gaelic, as well as Breton and Welsh. Modern "Celtic" often denotes both heritage styles and contemporary hybrids that blend folk with pop, rock, and ambient/new age aesthetics while retaining core melodic modes, dance forms, and timbral signatures.

Irish folk is the traditional song and dance-music heritage of Ireland, encompassing narrative ballads, unaccompanied sean-nós singing, and instrumental dance tunes such as reels, jigs, hornpipes, polkas, and slides. Its sound is defined by modal melodies (often Dorian and Mixolydian), intricate ornamentation (cuts, rolls, triplets, and crans), and acoustic timbres from fiddle, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, wooden flute, harp, concertina/accordion, tenor banjo, bouzouki, guitar (often in DADGAD), and bodhrán. Performances commonly happen in informal “sessions,” where musicians share tune sets and variations, or on stage in folk ensembles. Lyrically, the tradition ranges from humorous and convivial pub songs to poignant ballads of love, emigration, work, and resistance. The music’s social function—supporting dance, storytelling, and communal singing—remains central to its identity.
