Bird Flu: Southern Slang

Atl hip hop is the Atlanta-centered branch of Southern hip hop that helped shift rap’s commercial and stylistic center of gravity away from the U.S. coasts. It is known for bass-forward production, club-ready rhythms, and a wide range of approaches—from funk and soul-influenced rap to the sharper, hi-hat-driven sound that later became closely associated with trap. Lyrically it often balances local pride and street reportage with party energy, charismatic ad-libs, and melodic hooks designed for radio and clubs.

Crunk is a high-energy subgenre of Southern hip hop built for the club, the party, and the mosh-like dancefloor. It emphasizes booming 808 sub-bass, hard claps and snares, chantable hooks, and a shouted, call-and-response vocal style that turns the track into a crowd ritual. Typical crunk production relies on drum machines (especially 808s), short synth stabs, brass/string hits, and simple, aggressive grooves with minimal harmonic movement. MCs and hypemen deliver short, imperative lines—often repeated—designed to provoke movement, hype, and collective release. Rising from the Southern United States in the early 1990s and peaking in the mid‑2000s, crunk became one of the most dance- and club‑oriented branches of hip hop, with its influence extending into pop-rap, R&B fusions, and later trap aesthetics.

Dirty South rap is a Southern United States hip-hop style known for hard-hitting, bass-forward production and a raw, street-level vocal delivery. It often emphasizes car-system sub-bass, sparse but punchy drums, and regional rhythmic feels that range from cruising tempos to club-ready bounce. Lyrically, it commonly centers Southern street life, hustling, nightlife, pride in local scenes (Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, New Orleans, etc.), and larger-than-life braggadocio, with hooks designed to be shouted or chanted in clubs and at block parties.
