Nu gaze (often styled "nugaze") is a 21st‑century revival and modernization of classic shoegaze aesthetics. It preserves the genre’s hallmark blankets of overdriven guitars, blurred vocals, and swirling reverb/delay, but folds in cleaner indie-rock songcraft, post-rock dynamics, and contemporary production—often including synth pads, drum programming, and tighter low-end. Compared with 1990s shoegaze, nu gaze typically presents brighter mixes, crisper transients, and pop-leaning hooks while retaining an enveloping, dreamy atmosphere.

Indie punk blends the urgency and economy of punk with the tunefulness, introspection, and DIY aesthetics of indie rock. Songs are short, hook-driven, and guitar-forward, but they typically privilege wit, heart, and personality over virtuosity or gloss. Production is often raw or deliberately lo‑fi, guitars are overdriven rather than hyper‑distorted, and vocals lean toward shout‑sung sincerity. Compared with pop punk, indie punk tends to be less polished and more lyrically nuanced; compared with classic indie rock, it is faster, louder, and more kinetic while retaining melodic focus and a strong DIY ethos.

Surf punk is a high-energy fusion of classic 1960s surf rock guitar sonics with the speed, attitude, and DIY ethos of late-1970s punk rock. It typically features spring‑reverb‑drenched lead guitars playing twangy, tremolo‑picked lines over fast, down‑stroked power‑chord rhythms, with punchy bass and driving, straightforward drum patterns. Lyrics often reference coastal life, surfing, skating, suburban boredom, and irreverent humor, though many tracks are instrumental. The overall sound emphasizes immediacy, brevity, and raw, beach‑side adrenaline.
