"Al final de este viaje..."

Nueva canción is a Latin American song movement that emerged in the 1960s, blending traditional folk forms with contemporary, socially engaged songwriting. It foregrounds poetic, politically conscious lyrics that address social justice, labor, indigenous rights, anti-imperialism, and everyday dignity. Musically, it draws on Andean and Southern Cone folk idioms—such as cueca, zamba, and chacarera—alongside pan-Latin ballad traditions. Typical instrumentation includes nylon-string guitar, charango, quena and zampoña (panpipes), bombo legüero, and rich vocal harmonies, often arranged for ensembles. The style’s melodic language favors modal inflections and singable, anthemic choruses designed for communal participation. While it became a continent-wide phenomenon, Chilean artists were especially pivotal in shaping its aesthetics and political ethos, with the movement later radiating into Argentina, Uruguay, and Spain.

Nueva canción latinoamericana is a socially engaged song movement that revitalized Latin American folk traditions to address contemporary political and cultural realities. It blends rural and indigenous folk rhythms with modern, singer‑songwriter poetry, using acoustic instruments such as guitar, charango, quena, and bombo legüero. Lyrics foreground social justice, anti‑imperialism, labor struggle, indigenous rights, and national identity, often delivered in clear, declamatory melodies that invite communal singing. The result is music that is both rooted in local traditions and explicitly modern in its political consciousness.

Nueva trova is a Cuban singer‑songwriter movement that emerged in the late 1960s, blending the poetic intimacy of the island’s older trova tradition with socially conscious, often revolutionary, lyrics. It is typically guitar‑led and intimate, but can expand to small ensembles with subtle jazz‑inflected harmonies, echoing the filin (feeling) style and the romanticism of bolero while drawing rhythmic color from Cuban son and guajira. While aesthetically close to the broader Latin American nueva canción, nueva trova is distinctly Cuban in its idiom, metaphorical language, and engagement with post‑1959 cultural life.

Contemporary folk is a modern evolution of traditional folk aesthetics centered on intimate storytelling, clear melodies, and largely acoustic instrumentation. It favors voice-forward production, fingerpicked or gently strummed guitars, and arrangements that leave space for lyrics to resonate. While rooted in older folk ballad traditions, contemporary folk embraces current themes, production values, and song forms. Artists often blend guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, upright or electric bass, light percussion, and close vocal harmonies, creating a warm, organic sound. The genre frequently addresses personal reflection, social issues, place, memory, and identity, balancing timeless simplicity with contemporary sensibilities.

Singer-songwriter is a song-focused style in which the same person writes, composes, and performs their own material, often accompanying themselves on acoustic guitar or piano. It emphasizes personal voice, lyrical intimacy, and storytelling over elaborate production. Arrangements are typically sparse, allowing the melody, words, and performance nuance to carry the song’s emotional weight. While rooted in folk and blues traditions, singer-songwriter embraces pop and rock songcraft, producing works that can range from quiet confessional ballads to subtly orchestrated, radio-ready pieces.

Folk is a song-centered acoustic tradition rooted in community storytelling, everyday life, and social history. It emphasizes clear melodies, simple harmonies, and lyrics that foreground narrative, protest, and personal testimony. As a modern recorded genre, folk coalesced in the early-to-mid 20th century in the United States out of older ballad, work song, and rural dance traditions. It typically features acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), strophic song forms, and participatory singing (choruses, call-and-response).

Regional music is an umbrella term for locally rooted musical styles that are strongly tied to a specific place, community, and cultural practice. Rather than denoting one uniform sound, it encompasses many traditions whose instrumentation, rhythms, language, and performance customs reflect the history and daily life of a region. In the recording era, labels, radio programmers, and later streaming platforms used “regional music” to group market- or scene-specific traditions (for example, Cajun in Louisiana, son in Cuba, morna in Cape Verde, or Irish traditional music). The term highlights locality, vernacular identity, and continuity with folk or indigenous practices, even when these styles modernize or cross over into pop and rock contexts.

Trova is a Cuban singer‑songwriter tradition that emerged in the late 19th century, centered on itinerant guitar‑accompanied vocalists who composed and performed their own songs. Characterized by intimate, lyrical delivery and refined guitar accompaniment, trova blends Spanish poetic songcraft with Cuban rhythmic sensibilities (notably the habanera pulse). Themes commonly include love, longing, social observation, and patriotic sentiment, often presented in strophic forms suitable for serenades or small gatherings. The tradition laid the groundwork for Cuban bolero and later songwriter movements, preserving a focus on melody, poetic text, and expressive, ornamented vocal lines.

Caribbean music is an umbrella term for the interconnected popular and traditional styles that emerged across the islands and coastal rim of the Caribbean basin. It blends West and Central African rhythmic sensibilities and call-and-response singing with European (Iberian, French, British) dance forms, harmonies, and instrumentation introduced during the colonial era. Hallmark traits include polyrhythmic percussion, syncopation, and clave-based timelines (2–3 or 3–2), as well as the interplay of tumbao bass lines, guajeo/tres riffs, and horn stabs. Typical instruments and timbres range from hand drums (congas, bongos), timbales, maracas and güiro, to steelpan, brass sections, cuatro and tres, guitar skank, and electric bass. Lyrics move fluidly among English, Spanish, French/Antillean Creoles, and Dutch dialects, addressing themes of love, celebration, humor, sharp social commentary, and identity. As a transnational sound shaped by migration, carnival traditions, and diasporic exchange, Caribbean music birthed globally influential genres including son, rumba, merengue, compas, calypso, ska, reggae, dancehall, zouk, soca, salsa, bachata, and reggaeton.

Hispanic music is an umbrella term for the diverse body of Spanish‑language musical traditions originating in Spain and evolving across the Hispanic world of Latin America and the Caribbean. It encompasses folk, sacred, classical, and popular forms, and today includes everything from flamenco and bolero to salsa, norteño, bachata, rock en español, and reggaetón. Historically, it reflects a multilayered synthesis: Iberian song and dance practices, Catholic liturgical and art‑music lineages, and deep contributions from Indigenous American and West/Central African musics forged during the colonial era. The result is a family of styles united by language but varied in rhythm, instrumentation, and aesthetics, often emphasizing danceable grooves, expressive vocals, and storytelling lyrics.
