Classical music is the notated art-music tradition of Europe and its global descendants, characterized by durable forms, carefully codified harmony and counterpoint, and a literate score-based practice. The term “classical” can refer broadly to the entire Western art-music lineage from the Medieval era to today, not just the Classical period (c. 1750s–1820s). It privileges long-form structures (such as symphonies, sonatas, concertos, masses, and operas), functional or modal harmony, thematic development, and timbral nuance across ensembles ranging from solo instruments to full orchestras and choirs. Across centuries, the style evolved from chant and modal polyphony to tonal harmony, and later to post-tonal idioms, while maintaining a shared emphasis on written notation, performance practice, and craft.

Flamenco is a highly expressive musical and dance tradition from Andalusia that combines cante (song), toque (guitar), baile (dance), palmas (handclaps), and jaleo (shouts of encouragement). It is characterized by intricate rhythmic cycles called compás, intense vocal melismas with ornamental micro-inflections, and guitar techniques such as rasgueado, picado, alzapúa, golpe, and tremolo. Harmonically it often centers on the Phrygian mode and the Andalusian cadence (iv–III–II–I), creating a dramatic tension that complements the emotional depth of the lyrics, which frequently explore themes of love, loss, pride, and fate. Flamenco is organized into palos (forms) such as soleá, bulería, alegrías, seguiriyas, tientos/tangos, fandangos, tarantas, and rumba, each defined by its compás, mood, and traditional melodic/harmonic vocabulary.

Folk is a song-centered acoustic tradition rooted in community storytelling, everyday life, and social history. It emphasizes clear melodies, simple harmonies, and lyrics that foreground narrative, protest, and personal testimony. As a modern recorded genre, folk coalesced in the early-to-mid 20th century in the United States out of older ballad, work song, and rural dance traditions. It typically features acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), strophic song forms, and participatory singing (choruses, call-and-response).

Habanera is a Cuban song-and-dance genre that emerged in Havana in the 19th century, written in duple meter and defined by a distinctive syncopated rhythmic cell often described as a tresillo with an added backbeat (frequently felt as a 3–3–2 grouping across the bar). Typically moderate in tempo and frequently set in a minor key, habaneras combine European salon-song harmony with Afro-Cuban rhythmic sensibility. The style flourished both as a vocal strophic canción with romantic or nostalgic lyrics and as an instrumental dance form for piano and small ensembles. Its characteristic lilt and sensual sway made it an international craze by the late 19th century, permeating opera, art song, and popular music across Europe and the Americas.

Pop is a broad, hook-driven style of popular music designed for wide appeal. It emphasizes memorable melodies, concise song structures, polished vocals, and production intended for radio, charts, and mass media. While pop continually absorbs elements from other styles, its core remains singable choruses, accessible harmonies, and rhythmic clarity. Typical forms include verse–pre-chorus–chorus, frequent use of bridges and middle-eights, and ear-catching intros and outros. Pop is not defined by a single instrumentation. It flexibly incorporates acoustic and electric instruments, drum machines, synthesizers, and increasingly digital production techniques, always in service of the song and the hook.

Rock is a broad family of popular music centered on amplified instruments, a strong backbeat, and song forms that foreground riffs, choruses, and anthemic hooks. Emerging from mid‑20th‑century American styles like rhythm & blues, country, and gospel-inflected rock and roll, rock quickly expanded in scope—absorbing folk, blues, and psychedelic ideas—while shaping global youth culture. Core sonic markers include electric guitar (often overdriven), electric bass, drum kit emphasizing beats 2 and 4, and emotive lead vocals. Rock songs commonly use verse–chorus structures, blues-derived harmony, and memorable melodic motifs, ranging from intimate ballads to high‑energy, stadium‑sized performances.

Singer-songwriter is a song-focused style in which the same person writes, composes, and performs their own material, often accompanying themselves on acoustic guitar or piano. It emphasizes personal voice, lyrical intimacy, and storytelling over elaborate production. Arrangements are typically sparse, allowing the melody, words, and performance nuance to carry the song’s emotional weight. While rooted in folk and blues traditions, singer-songwriter embraces pop and rock songcraft, producing works that can range from quiet confessional ballads to subtly orchestrated, radio-ready pieces.

Soundtrack is music created to accompany and enhance visual media such as film, television, and video games. It includes original scores (instrumental or vocal music composed specifically for the picture) and, at times, curated compilations of pre-existing songs. Stylistically, soundtrack is a meta-genre that can encompass orchestral symphonic writing, jazz, electronic and synth-driven textures, choral forces, popular song, and experimental sound design. Its defining trait is functional storytelling: themes, motifs, harmony, rhythm, and timbre are shaped by narrative needs, character psychology, pacing, and editing. Common features include leitmotifs for characters or ideas, modular cues that can be edited to picture, dynamic orchestration for dramatic range, and production approaches that sit well under dialogue and sound effects. Because it must synchronize to picture, soundtrack often uses clear dramatic arcs, tempo maps, and hit points.
