Persian classical (musiqi-e asil) is the art-music tradition of Iran centered on the modal system called dastgāh and its body of canonical melodies known as the radif. Performances are typically intimate and improvisation-forward, unfolding through a succession of gusheh (short melodic pieces) within a dastgāh, guided by recognizable cadential gestures (forud) and a central tone (shāhed). Its sound world features nuanced microtonal inflections using koron (lowered) and sori (raised) accidentals, fluid rhythmic freedom in avāz (non-metric improvisation), and contrasting metered forms like pishdarāmad, chahārmezrāb, tasnif (song), and reng (dance). Core instruments include tar, setar, kamancheh, santur, ney, and tombak (tonbak), with the human voice employing elaborate ornaments (tahrir). The repertoire draws on classical Persian poetry (Hafez, Rumi, Saadi), creating a contemplative, mystical, and deeply expressive aesthetic.

Persian pop (Iranian pop) blends Western popular music forms with Persian melodic systems, poetic lyricism, and distinctive vocal ornamentation. It emerged in urban centers like Tehran, where nightlife venues, radio, and television fostered a modern sound that stayed rooted in Persian aesthetics. The genre spans romantic ballads and dance-floor anthems, often using a 4/4 or Iranian 6/8 groove, lush string arrangements, and memorable choruses. Singers typically deliver expressive lines that borrow from classical tahrir (ornamented vocal runs) while staying within accessible pop song structures.

Pop is a broad, hook-driven style of popular music designed for wide appeal. It emphasizes memorable melodies, concise song structures, polished vocals, and production intended for radio, charts, and mass media. While pop continually absorbs elements from other styles, its core remains singable choruses, accessible harmonies, and rhythmic clarity. Typical forms include verse–pre-chorus–chorus, frequent use of bridges and middle-eights, and ear-catching intros and outros. Pop is not defined by a single instrumentation. It flexibly incorporates acoustic and electric instruments, drum machines, synthesizers, and increasingly digital production techniques, always in service of the song and the hook.

Pop rock blends the hook-focused immediacy of pop with the instrumentation and drive of rock. It prioritizes catchy melodies, concise song structures, and polished production while retaining guitars, bass, and drums as core elements. Typical pop rock tracks use verse–pre-chorus–chorus forms, strong vocal harmonies, and memorable riffs. The sound ranges from jangly and bright to mildly overdriven and arena-ready, aiming for radio-friendly appeal without abandoning rock’s rhythmic punch.
