West Side Sound
West Side Sound is a regional Chicano soul scene that coalesced in and around San Antonio, Texas, in the 1950s. Although its name references the city’s West Side, the style was made across South‑Central Texas by working‑class Mexican‑American teenagers and bands. Rather than a single codified formula, West Side Sound is a hybrid of mid‑century rhythm & blues, doo‑wop balladry, early rock and roll shuffles, and Texas–Mexican traditions such as conjunto/Tejano. Its hallmark timbres include prominent tenor‑saxophone sections, Hammond‑style organs, smooth group harmonies, and crooning lead vocals—often bilingual. The result is a warm, romantic, slow‑dance friendly soul sound that became a cornerstone of Chicano popular music and later “lowrider oldies.”

Tex-Mex
Tex-Mex is a borderland fusion that blends Mexican conjunto and norteño traditions with U.S. country, rock and roll, and blues. Its signature sound revolves around the diatonic button accordion leading catchy melodies over the strummed/bass-walking bajo sexto, with electric bass and drums locking in an "oom‑pah" polka or a lilting waltz. The genre emerged in Texas border communities, absorbing German and Czech dance rhythms (polka, schottische, waltz) while adopting American honky‑tonk, rock backbeats, and blues guitar licks. Songs often mix Spanish and English (Spanglish), highlighting stories of love, migration, work, and pride in Tejano/Mexican American identity. Compared with glossy 1980s+ Tejano pop, Tex‑Mex typically stays more rootsy and accordion‑driven, though many artists move fluidly between the two.

Tejano
Tejano (also called Tex‑Mex music) is a Mexican‑American popular style that blends the conjunto and norteño ensemble tradition with European dance rhythms (polka, schottische, waltz) and U.S. popular genres such as country, blues, funk, and rock. At its core are the accordion and bajo sexto, supported by electric bass and drum kit. Two main ensemble lineages coexist: the conjunto/accordion format and the orquesta Tejana format with saxophones and trumpets. Since the late 1970s, keyboards and synthesizers have been central to the "modern" Tejano sound, while cumbia, ballad, and two‑step grooves broaden its dance palette. Lyrics are typically in Spanish (often bilingual), centering on love, border life, working‑class pride, and festive social dance. The result is a dance‑forward, catchy, and distinctly borderlands music that feels at once Mexican in roots and American in production and stylistic openness.

Texan Music
Texan music is a regional umbrella that blends Anglo-American country and western, African American blues and gospel, and Mexican/Tejano traditions into a distinctive sound shaped by Texas dancehalls, border culture, and a strong independent ethos. Across its many strands you will hear fiddles and steel guitar alongside Telecaster leads, accordions and bajo sexto, shuffling Texas blues backbeats, and the two-step polka and waltz rhythms brought by German and Czech immigrants. Storytelling is central: songs chronicle ranch and refinery work, open roads, honky-tonks, and life along the Rio Grande, often in plainspoken, image-rich lyrics. The result ranges from intimate singer‑songwriter ballads to big-band Western swing, from Tejano and Tex‑Mex dance music to gritty electric blues and country outlaw swagger.
