Yiddish Folksong
Yiddish folksong is the vernacular vocal tradition of Ashkenazi Jews, sung in the Yiddish language and rooted in the everyday life of Eastern and Central Europe. It encompasses lullabies, love songs, wedding and dance tunes, work and street songs, humorous couplets, and political or devotional pieces. Musically it blends Jewish modal practice with Slavic and Central European folk idioms. Typical features include minor tonalities, modal scales such as Freygish (Ahava Rabbah/Phrygian dominant) and Misheberakh (often akin to Ukrainian Dorian), flexible rhythms with parlando-rubato phrasing, and expressive ornaments (krekhtsn “sob-like” grace notes and kvetch “bent” tones). While often sung unaccompanied, performances frequently use small ensembles—violin, clarinet, tsimbl (hammered dulcimer), accordion, and later guitar or piano—drawing on the neighboring klezmer dance tradition. The repertoire carries the social memory of the shtetl, urban immigrant life, and the labor movement, and it survived through oral transmission, community songbooks, and later field recordings and stage interpretations.

Chazzanut
Chazzanut is the tradition of Jewish cantorial chant used by the chazzan, or cantor, in synagogue prayer. It is a vocal liturgical art centered on the recitation, chanting, and semi-improvised melodic elaboration of Hebrew prayers, scriptural passages, and other sacred texts within Jewish worship. The style is especially associated with Ashkenazi synagogue practice, though cantorial traditions exist across many Jewish communities. In common English usage, "chazzanut" usually refers to the developed Eastern and Central European cantorial tradition that grew into a highly expressive solo vocal form. Musically, chazzanut combines ancient prayer modes, formulaic melodic patterns, free-rhythm declamation, ornate melisma, emotional intensity, and moments of dramatic vocal display. Depending on the prayer, it may move between intimate, speech-like delivery and highly elaborated, virtuosic singing. Its purpose is devotional rather than secular entertainment: the cantor serves as a musical-spiritual leader who gives shape, emotion, and communal accessibility to the liturgy.

Jewish Liturgical Music
Jewish liturgical music is the body of musical practice used to chant, sing, and adorn the Hebrew liturgy in the synagogue and at home. It centers on the voice, the sacred Hebrew (and some Aramaic) texts, and time-specific modal frameworks known as nusach, which signal the service, day, and season. Rather than fixed melodies, it uses modal motifs, cantillation systems (ta'amei ha-mikra) for biblical reading, and a spectrum of regional traditions (Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, Yemenite, and others). Cantorial artistry (hazzanut) ranges from restrained recitative to highly ornate melismatic singing. Historically unaccompanied, it remains primarily vocal; however, choirs and organs were introduced in some modern communities. Across centuries, Jewish liturgical music absorbed and dialogued with surrounding cultures—Byzantine, Syriac, Arabic/Persian maqām traditions—while maintaining distinctive modal cadences, prayer roles (shaliach tzibbur/cantor vs. congregation), and characteristic motives (e.g., Mi-Sinai tunes in Ashkenaz and maqām-based selections in Sephardi/Mizrahi rites).
