Old School Dancehall
Old school dancehall is the formative era of Jamaica’s dancehall, spanning the late 1970s through the early-to-mid 1990s. It grew out of sound-system culture and the shift from roots reggae’s band-centric, message-heavy approach toward leaner, bass-forward "riddims" designed for toasting (MCing) and crowd control. Early old school dancehall (often called "rub‑a‑dub") centered on live bands like Roots Radics driving minimalist, heavy drum-and-bass grooves, over which deejays delivered rhythmic, improvisatory chants in Jamaican patois. By 1985, the scene pivoted to digital with Wayne Smith’s "Sleng Teng" riddim, bringing drum machines and cheap keyboards into the dance. Lyrically, old school dancehall ranges from party-starting braggadocio, dancing instructions, and witty clash talk to topical commentary. Sonically, it emphasizes a sparse mix with offbeat skank, big subs, and dub-inspired delay and reverb—purpose-built for massive sound systems and a responsive, dancing crowd.

Northern Soul
Northern soul is a British dance and record‑collecting movement that champions fast, dramatic, and often obscure American soul singles from the mid‑1960s. Rooted in the mod scene, it favors Motown‑influenced 4/4 "stompers" with driving backbeats, tambourine, handclaps, punchy horns, and soaring vocals. Rather than a studio-born genre, northern soul is a club culture defined by DJs, dancers, and rare 7-inch singles. Its identity centers on high-tempo soul songs (typically 120–135 BPM), euphoric choruses, and romantic or inspirational themes that keep dancefloors moving through all‑night sessions.

Jamaican Ska
Jamaican ska is the first wave of ska, a horn-driven, dance-oriented popular music that emerged in Jamaica in the late 1950s and flourished in the early 1960s. It is characterized by a walking bass line, crisp guitar or piano upstrokes on the offbeats (the “skank”), and punchy horn riffs that trade call-and-response lines with the vocals. Rooted in a fusion of Jamaican mento and Caribbean calypso with American rhythm and blues, jump blues, and jazz, Jamaican ska developed in the crucible of Kingston’s sound-system culture. It is energetic, bright, and communal, designed as much for street dances as for the studio, and it laid the rhythmic foundation for rocksteady and reggae that followed.
