NZ folk (New Zealand folk) blends British and Irish ballad traditions, sea‑shanty heritage, and local storytelling with Māori waiata and the timbres of taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments). It typically features acoustic guitars, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, double bass, and close vocal harmonies, with lyrics rooted in landscape, seafaring, migration, rural life, and social protest. Since the late 20th century, a new wave of singer‑songwriters has folded indie sensibilities into the tradition while retaining the genre’s narrative focus and sense of place.
