Christian Punk
Christian punk is a faith-oriented offshoot of punk rock that marries the speed, distortion, and DIY ethos of punk with explicitly or implicitly Christian lyrical themes. Lyrics often explore testimony, grace, doubt, social justice, and personal morality, ranging from overt evangelism to subtle worldview. Sonically, it spans from raw hardcore-leaning attacks to melodic skate/pop-punk. Because the label describes lyrical content rather than a distinct musical form, its boundaries are debated; some bands reject the tag even while performing within Christian scenes or markets. The style built parallel networks of labels, festivals, fanzines, and church/club circuits, allowing bands to operate both in mainstream punk spaces and within contemporary Christian music infrastructures.

Christian Hardcore
Christian hardcore is a faith-oriented branch of hardcore punk that combines the speed, aggression, and DIY ethos of hardcore with explicitly Christian themes. Songs are typically short, fast, and intense, featuring shouted or screamed vocals, thick power‑chord riffs, and mosh‑friendly drum patterns. Lyrically, bands address spirituality, personal struggle, social justice, redemption, and community, often drawing on biblical imagery while avoiding proselytizing clichés by grounding messages in lived experience. The scene emphasizes all-ages shows, inclusivity, and grassroots ethics, mirroring the broader hardcore community’s focus on authenticity and communal support.

Straight Edge
Straight edge is a strain of hardcore punk defined as much by its ethical stance as by its sound. The term comes from Minor Threat’s 1981 song "Straight Edge," which rejected alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs, and often extended to promiscuity, gambling, and later to vegetarianism/veganism. Musically, straight edge bands play fast, compact hardcore marked by urgent tempos, shouted lead vocals, gang-chorus hooks, and breakdowns built for stage dives and pile-ons. Guitars use tight, mid-to-high gain power-chords with minimal solos, while drums favor skank beats and brisk two-steps. Lyrically, songs emphasize self-control, personal responsibility, community, and social awareness, delivered with a positive, motivational tone even when confronting anger or injustice. Aesthetically, the movement adopted DIY ethics and recognizable symbols—most famously the “X” on hands—reflecting an all-ages, alcohol-free show culture and a commitment to sober spaces within punk.
