Children's music is a broad category of songs and musical pieces created specifically for young listeners, typically from preschool through the pre-teen years. It prioritizes accessibility, education, participation, and fun. The style favors simple, memorable melodies; repetitive, call-and-response structures; and clear, friendly vocals. Lyrics are usually narrative or instructional, using everyday vocabulary, rhymes, humor, and imaginative themes (animals, numbers, colors, feelings, and stories). Arrangements often feature bright timbres, handclaps, and small percussion, with moderate tempos that support movement and group singing. While rooted in folk traditions, lullabies, nursery rhymes, music hall/vaudeville, and classical pedagogy, modern children's music also borrows from pop, rock, country, and global styles. It spans intimate lullabies, classroom sing-alongs, educational anthems, and high-production soundtracks for film, television, and digital platforms.

Musical (musical theatre) is a narrative stage form that integrates songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance to tell a story. Its core aim is dramatic storytelling in which music advances plot, deepens character, and shapes emotional arcs, often through recurring motives and reprises. Developed primarily on Broadway (New York) and later the West End (London), the genre blends operetta’s melodic lyricism, vaudeville’s variety entertainment, revue’s song-driven showcase, and Tin Pan Alley’s popular songcraft. Musicals range from intimate chamber pieces to large-scale "megamusicals," and from traditional book musicals to rock, hip‑hop, and concept-driven works. The musical’s songbook has fed the Great American Songbook and popular music at large, while the stage craft has influenced film, television, and concert performance.

Non-music is an umbrella category for recorded audio whose primary purpose is not musical performance. It encompasses spoken word, speeches, interviews, poetry readings, comedy, audio documentaries, instructional recordings, field recordings, sound effects, and other forms of organized sound meant to inform, narrate, document, or entertain without relying on melody or conventional song structure. Rather than emphasizing harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation, non-music foregrounds voice, text, ambient sound, narrative flow, informational content, and sonic texture. Its aesthetics range from raw, unedited actuality to highly produced studio works, and its scope spans archival preservation, education, performance art, and mass entertainment.
